Monitoring of the British Museum - London
The British Museum has amongst the largest and most comprehensive artefact collection in the World and caters for over 6 million visitors ever year.
An extension to the building is currently under construction and to protect not only this heritage structure but also the artefacts mentioned, all noise and vibration impacts have to be rigorously managed and continuously controlled.
Commencing in March 2011, the piling works was considered as one of the most intrusive activities with regard to noise and vibration. SolData acousticians were mobilised to support Bachy Soletanche to ensure that noise and vibration parameters were monitored and managed in the most efficient manner to better the project specifications and protect this national heritage.
By undertaking noise modelling and vibration trial measurements, impact assessments were developed in close cooperation with the British Museum’s acoustic consultant and Bachy Soletanche. A strategy plan, regarding expected noise and vibrations issues has been developed and implemented by the team on site with a specific monitoring programme including automated noise and vibration solutions, manual vibration system and video cameras in order to control, in real-time, the impact of the works at various sensitive locations identified in the impact assessment.
The success of the monitoring solution and the confidence gained by the British Museum allowed SolData to subsequently be chosen by the main contractor as its acoustic specialist for the construction of the structure which immediately follows the completion of the foundation works.
